Trees rarely die overnight. They decline over seasons and years, dropping hints the whole way, and the homeowners who learn to read those hints save thousands of dollars and occasionally a roof. Here are the twelve signs we check on every assessment, ranked by how worried each one should make you.

Dead branches held in the canopy

ACT

Every mature tree carries a little deadwood, but concentration and size are what matter. Multiple large dead limbs, especially clustered on one side or in the upper crown, mean the tree is rationing: it no longer has the energy to supply its whole body, and it is abandoning territory. Arborists call standing dead limbs widow makers for a reason, because they let go without wind, warning, or pattern.

Look up after leaf out. Bare limbs against a green canopy are the easiest diagnosis in tree care, and the higher and thicker they are, the less this is a pruning note and the more it is a structural conversation. A tree more than a third dead is generally past saving.

Fungus and mushrooms at the base

URGENT

Mushrooms in the lawn are harmless. Mushrooms growing from the trunk, the root flare, or the major roots are not: fruiting bodies mean an established fungal colony is consuming the structural wood inside. Shelf like conks on the trunk, honey colored clusters at the base, and the big artist’s conk brackets are all bad news with species specific accents, and by the time any of them fruit, the decay behind them is years old.

Root and butt rot is the most dangerous decay there is, because it eats the anchor while the sail stays up. A green, full canopy over a rotted base is exactly how healthy looking trees end up horizontal in storms. Conks at the base earn a professional look this month, not this year.

Bark falling away in sheets

ACT

Some species shed bark by design; sycamores, river birches, and shagbark hickories are supposed to look untidy. What no healthy tree does is drop bark to expose bare, smooth wood in large patches. The living tissue that builds bark lies just beneath it, and when a section dies, the bark above it starves, cracks, and sloughs off. Large sheets of loss, brittle bark that snaps rather than bends, and exposed wood turning gray in patches all map dead zones on the trunk.

Check the edges of any bare patch: living callus tissue rolling inward means the tree is fighting to close the wound, while edges that keep dying back mean the dead zone is growing. Vertical strips of loss below a dead limb often trace a decay column already running down the trunk.

A thinning, transparent crown

WATCH

Compare your tree to its own history and to its neighbors. A canopy you can suddenly see the sky through, leaves noticeably smaller than previous years, or foliage bunched at the branch tips with bare wood behind it all point to a tree living on reduced rations, usually because roots are struggling. Thinning is the earliest useful sign on this list, and the most recoverable: caught early, watering, mulching, soil decompaction, and patience reverse it more often than not.

Photograph your major trees in full leaf every June from the same spot. A yearly photo series turns “does it look thinner to you?” into an answer, and it is precisely the evidence an arborist wants to see.

Leaning that is new or getting worse

URGENT

Plenty of trees lean and have leaned their whole lives; a settled lean with a curved trunk that returns to vertical growth is a tree that adapted long ago. The dangerous lean is the one that was not there last month. Fresh tilting means roots are letting go right now, and it is the single most urgent structural sign a standing tree can show.

Confirm at the base: soil cracking or mounding on the side away from the lean, lifted turf, or exposed roots on the tension side mean the root plate itself is rotating out of the ground. That tree has partially failed already, and finishing the fall is a matter of weather. Keep everyone away from the fall zone and treat it as an emergency call.

Cracks, seams, and splits in the trunk

URGENT

Wood talks before it breaks. Vertical cracks that open into the trunk, especially ones you can fit fingers into, are structural failures in progress. The classic catastrophe pattern is a codominant union, two trunks rising in a tight V, with bark pinched inside the joint instead of connective wood; when a crack appears below that union, the tree is unzipping.

Depth and change are your guides: surface frost cracks and old sealed seams are common and often stable, while anything deep, widening, or weeping fluid deserves a professional eye immediately. Cabling and bracing can sometimes save a cracking union caught early, but that judgment belongs to someone with a harness and experience, not to hope.

Carpenter ants, beetles, and boring insects

ACT

Most insects on a healthy tree are tenants, not threats. Two kinds are informants. Carpenter ants excavate galleries only in wood that decay has already softened, so a steady stream of big black ants entering a cavity, with piles of sawdust like frass below, is a decay report delivered by courier. Bark beetles and borers, meanwhile, specialize in stressed trees; fine boring dust in bark crevices, D shaped or round exit holes, and woodpeckers suddenly working your tree hard are signs the wood beneath is hosting larvae.

Insects rarely kill a healthy tree; they finish a struggling one. Treat their arrival as a symptom pointing at the underlying stress, and get both diagnosed together.

No leaves in one section, or early fall color

ACT

A tree that leafs out everywhere except one limb, one side, or its top is drawing you a map of its plumbing. Sectional dieback traces the specific roots or vascular pathways that have failed, and top down death, called crown dieback, is the signature of girdling roots, construction damage, and several lethal diseases. Similarly, one tree turning fall colors in August while the neighborhood is green is announcing that it is shutting down early under stress.

Sectional symptoms are worth moving on quickly because several causes, including vascular wilts, are treatable or containable if caught in the first season and fatal if ignored for two.

Sprouts from the base and trunk

WATCH

Clusters of thin, vigorous shoots erupting from the root flare or straight out of the trunk, called suckers and epicormic sprouts, are a stress response. The tree’s upper canopy is no longer feeding it adequately, so dormant buds fire as an emergency backup plan. A few basal suckers on species prone to them mean little; a trunk suddenly bristling with sprouts below a thinning crown means the main canopy is failing and the tree is trying to start over from the ground.

The sprouts themselves are weakly attached and never a real replacement. Read them as a symptom gauge: the more dramatic the sprouting, the further gone the canopy above it.

Hollow or soft spots in the trunk

ACT

Trees engineer themselves as tubes, so a hollow center is survivable; plenty of ancient oaks are pipes with picnics inside. What matters is how much sound wall remains and where the openings are. Probe gently: punky wood that a screwdriver sinks into, cavities that hold water, or a dull drum sound where the trunk should knock solid all mean the wall is thinning. The rough rule of thumb arborists use is that a tree wants at least an inch of sound wood for every six inches of diameter, with big deductions for cavity openings.

A hollow tree over an empty fence line can often be monitored for years. The same tree over a bedroom cannot. Target, as always, is half the assessment.

Root damage you can date

WATCH

If a tree starts declining and you can name what happened near it in the last five years, you usually have your answer. Trenching for utilities, a new driveway or patio over the root zone, grade changes that buried the flare, soil compaction from construction traffic, and even enthusiastic rototilling all destroy roots invisibly, and trees pay for root loss on a delay of one to five years. The flare is your quick check: a trunk that enters the ground like a telephone pole, with no visible flare, is buried too deep or was filled over.

Date the insult, watch the canopy, and get an assessment at the first thinning. Early intervention on root problems, air excavation, decompaction, and watering, saves more trees than any other treatment we do.

The scratch test says brown

ACT

The oldest field test still works. Scratch a small patch of bark on a young twig with a thumbnail: living tissue underneath is moist and green, dead tissue is brown and dry. Work inward, twig by twig, branch by branch, and you can map exactly how much of the tree is still alive. Whole limbs scratching brown in summer are gone; brown all the way to the trunk on multiple scaffolds means the tree is mostly a standing skeleton regardless of what a few surviving shoots suggest.

Do the test after a hard winter or a brutal drought before writing any tree off, though; plenty of trees leaf out late and live. Green under the bark buys patience. Brown everywhere does not.

Dying vs. Dead vs. Dangerous: They Are Different Questions

A declining tree is not automatically a hazard, and a hazard is not automatically dying; the two scales move independently, and the smart money manages both. A struggling tree in the open can be treated, monitored, and given years to recover, because even a worst case failure hits grass. The same tree beside a house, a driveway, or a trampoline gets a much shorter leash. Professional assessments weigh three things together: the tree’s condition, the likelihood of failure, and what failure would land on. That third factor, the target, is the one homeowners consistently underweight, and it is why we will sometimes green light a half dead tree in a back corner while recommending removal of a much healthier looking one over the garage.

Money argues for early decisions too. A declining tree removed while sound is a standard job; a dead one is a hazard removal costing 25 to 50 percent more because brittle wood changes every technique; and a failed one is an emergency bill plus a deductible. Your 10 minute yearly inspection
  • Stand back and compare the crown’s density to last year’s photo from the same spot.
  • Circle the base looking for mushrooms, conks, cracks in soil, and a visible root flare.
  • Scan the trunk for cracks, bare patches, sawdust, and sprouts.
  • Look up for dead limbs, hangers, and sections that failed to leaf out.
  • Scratch test anything suspicious, and write down what you find with the date.

Emergency Tree Removal

Why Trees Die: The Usual Suspects

Understanding the cause changes what you do next, and the causes cluster predictably. Water is first, in both directions: multi year droughts kill slowly from the top down, while compacted, waterlogged, or newly regraded soil suffocates roots from below. Construction is second, and it is sneakier, because the damage is done to roots you cannot see, on a delay you do not expect; the beautiful oak that dies three summers after the addition was built is a cliche in our line of work. Pests and diseases, emerald ash borer, oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, bacterial leaf scorch, and their regional cousins, are third, and they matter enormously because several are treatable early and none are treatable late.

The rest of the list is people being kind incorrectly: mulch volcanoes piled against trunks that rot the bark and invite girdling roots, string trimmers chewing the cambium at the base one pass at a time, lawn herbicides drifting onto root zones, soil piled over flares, and pruning done with enthusiasm instead of knowledge. What Happens After the Assessment

Most assessments end in one of three plans. Save it: watering regimes, mulch rings, soil work, pest treatment, and restorative pruning have rescued more trees than homeowners expect, and our trimming and pruning crew handles the surgical side of recovery, removing deadwood and rebalancing a stressed canopy so the tree can spend energy on healing instead of holding dead weight. Whichever way it goes, insist on reasons, not vibes. A good arborist will show you the conk, the crack, or the brown cambium and explain the call. That transparency is the difference between tree care and tree sales, and it is the standard every removal recommendation should meet before you sign anything.

One last calibration: do not let this checklist make you paranoid about every imperfect tree. Mature trees collect scars, cavities, and character the way old houses collect creaks, and most of them are structurally fine. The checklist exists to catch change, combinations, and location, a new symptom where there was none, several signs stacking on one trunk, or any serious sign on a tree with a serious target. One yellow flag on a back fence oak is a note in your phone; three flags over the kids’ swing set is this week’s phone call. Calibrated vigilance, not anxiety, is what keeps both your trees and your roofline intact.
